Abstract:

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a series of Taylor Valley lakes have been monitored for conductivity, temperature and depth. A Seabird 25 CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) instrument was used to record temperature profiles in perennial ice covered lakes.

Comments
This instrument is used in place of the YSI 58 Dissolved Oxygen Meter to obtain fine scale temperature profiles. The Priscu Research Group maintains a CTD database dating back to 1989 for Lake Bonney (east and west), and 1993 for Lakes Hoare and Fryxell.

Description:
Originally, only temperature was submitted to the database, but in August 2006 Amy Chiuchiolo sent Chris Gardner (Data Manager) data files for 2001-2006 for all measured parameters. This table replaced the old table called "LIMNO_CTD_TEMP"

Description:
The Seabird 25 CTD instrument is cast in the Weatherport sampling hole (Fryxell, Hoare, East and West Lake Bonney; other lakes are profiled from an outside hole) using a depth calibrated winch. The instrument is positioned in the hole such that the pressure sensor is 0.8m below the piezometric water level at the start of deployment. It is deployed at a rate of 1m sec-1 to a depth approximately 1m above the bottom of the lake and retrieved. Data is compiled, using SBE Data Processing -Win32, into approximately 0.2m intervals. Depth intervals are adjusted accordingly to the preset 0.8m to correct any offset observed in the pressure sensor output. Salinities over 99.0 PSU are calculated using the UNESCO equation (Spigel and Priscu, 1996; Spigel and Priscu, 1998).
